Dehradun is the provisional capital city of the Uttarakhand state (earlier known as Uttaranchal) in India. It is also the headquarters of the Dehradun District.
The name Dehradun originated from two words, Dera (or Dehra) which means a camp, and Dun or Doon which is a reference to a local term used for a river valley. This river valley lies between a smaller range of Shivalik hills and the main Himalayas.
The Dehradun district is surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, Shivalik Hills in the south, the river Ganga in the east, and the river Yamuna in the west. Nearby hill stations like Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Chakrata are very famous and are most visited by tourist. The city has witnessed tremendous growth in the last 20 years. Because of its educational background and high international remittances Dehradun enjoys a high per capita income. |
