City Information
Bhopal is said to have been founded by the Parmar King Bhoj (1000–1055). The city was originally known as Bhojpal which was named after the king Bhoj and the dam ('pal') that he is said to have constructed to form the lakes surrounding Bhopal.
Historically, Bhopal was capital of the Bhopal state. But now it is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and the administrative headquarter of Bhopal District and Bhopal Division.
Bhopal is known as the City of Lakes as its landscape is dotted with a number of natural lakes. It is also one of the greenest cities of India. Handicraft is also a major engagement. Zardozi work is a kind of embroidery which is famous and has huge demands in and around the city. The main areas of attractions in the city are the Taj-ul-Masajidwhich is the largest mosque and Upper Lake which is the largest artificial lake in Asia.
The city attracted international attention due to the tragic Bhopal disaster. It was when the Union Carbide plant, which manufactured pesticides, leaked deadly methyl isocyanine gas. This gas leak caused the worst industrial disaster in history leading to massive loss of human life.
